Infosys: Turns Carbon Neutral and Announces New ESG Vision for 2030

Infosys is one of the biggest IT service provider in the world. This India-based company scores 3rd rank in World’s Best Regarded Companies by Forbes.

However, that is not the only thing this company is famous for. Being India’s second-largest IT Company, Infosys is also known for its Eco-friendliness.

In the Paris agreement, many companies and countries take taken a pledge to become carbon neutral by 2050. However, Infosys successfully achieves the goal way ahead of the timeline.

Infosys Software Services have officially become carbon neutral in the year 2020. No other IT company have managed to do so.

They have more three decades of time left to make more changes in their operations.

Environmental, Social and Governance Vision:

This company have made a recent announcement of their ESG Vision of 2030. ESG = Environmental, Social and Governance. 

This is a new vision, along with all the other core areas the company focus on. They have the commitment in core areas of business like,

Infosys has always been known for balancing success with focusing on ecology and society.

They are going to introduce the ESG factor more into their company in the wake of current environmental problems.

Unlike other companies, Infosys has realized the importance of climate conditions since the beginning. They have started taking actions to fight climate change since 2008. 

And finally, after 12 years of hard work, the company successfully claims to become carbon neutral in 2020.

Even though they are way ahead of time, they will still continue to provide “sustainable business performance”. 

They are taking several efforts to fulfil their ESG Vision 2030. They will use renewables to increase energy efficiency. Moreover, they also have carbon offset projects. They will follow these community-based projects.

Infosys has decreased its per capita electricity consumption. They consume 55% less electricity and use renewable energy.

This year, the company have used 44% of electricity generated by renewable energy. They have investments in 60 MW solar power capacity. 

They have various project portfolios to reduce the amount of carbon. Moreover, they support the rural community. It is a part of their UN Sustainable Development goals. Also, it helps them to tackle climate change. It also supports nearly 1 lakh, rural families.

Infosys and Climate Change:

Infosys have plans to offset the carbon they produce each year. They are going to cover Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. They are going to reduce the Greenhouse Gas emission in Scope 1 and 2 by 75 per cent. In scope 3, they will reduce it by 30%.

  • 1 Scope  = Direct Emissions
  • 2 Scope  = Indirect Emissions from Utility
  • 3 Scope  = All Other Sources

Apart from tackling climate change, they also take measures to teach digital skills to more than 10 million people. They will improve the lives of more than 80 million people with the help of technology.

Infosys is adopting a holistic approach to tackle all the problems associated with sustainability. They are one of the few companies who are taking extreme measure to control their carbon footprints.
